Some things I have learned in the past 2 1/2 weeks....
Labor sucks....for all the pregnant ladies out there, may I suggest an epidural
You can fall asleep between contractions. This does not mean they hurt any less. It just means you're really tired and in pain
Epidurals are a wonderful thing
C/sections....not all that bad
Hospital beds...that bad
All of the above doesn't matter once you get that baby in your arms
You can stare at one little face for hours and still be amazed

Girl scouts
Are girl scout cookies really THAT good or is just because we can only have them once a year? Is it like Christmas presents or egg salad sandwiches at Easter? We crave them so because they are only here a short time? We bought some today and I really wanted to take them home and hide them. I didn't, but part of me wanted Skye to get his own boxes.
And there is a certain way to eat girl scout cookies. Thin mints MUST be put in the freezer. Tag-a-longs (the peanut butter/chocolate ones) MUST be put in the fridge so the chocolate gets cold. And -THE BEST FOR LAST-the Samona's (or Carmel delites as they are called here) must be savored slowly because they are the world's best cookie.
And do you think this insane love of cookies is related to the ten months of pregnancy or do I really feel this way?

Kitty love
As the finals days pass until the arrival of Baby Carolina, I find myself drifting into a sentimental type mood. Small pink clothes will do that to a girl. But here it is almost Valentine's day and I'm thinking about love. Obviously I love my husband, my parents, and family...but what else or who else do I love?
I love my kitties. I have always loved four legged creatures. Never could pass up a dog or cat looking for a scratch on the head, but I really love my goofy, oddball little cats...and here's why.
Keeda: He is a big (and I mean big) orange Tabby who is afraid of his own shadow. He is completely food obsessed and lives half his life in a hole he made in our box springs. Not too smart this kitty. But everyday when I get home, he's waiting on the table for his "hug."
Utah: He is skinny and shiny. He also not too smart, but in a more amusing "watch this cat fall off the chair" way. He loves to chase his tail and often ends up falling down the stairs while doing so. He is obsessed with the wrapper from sting cheese. I have found him digging through the garbage can attempting to fish these wrappers out and then chase them for hours around the living room.
I love these kitties because they follow me from room to room at night, waiting for my lap to reappear. I love them because they cuddle together at night and lick each others heads. Because they try to make us stay home by laying in our suitcase and refusing to budge. And I love them because every morning I awake to two pairs of kitty eyes staring at me with rapture. (I feed them in the morning, but I like to pretend they just like me.)
I suppose I am thinking of my kitties because they are about to move down a notch in the family. Pretty sure they will have to share the tummy rubs and the bed with another little squirmy creature. I only hope that little creature will share the kitty love with me for years to come.

The Final Countdown
Although my dear pregnant brain has started to fail me at work, I can still count. I figured out today we are on the last push towards baby time! (I say we including my whole family, but I really mean me. I get a little rounder each day).
Five more weeks until my offical due date. The nursery is ready thanks very much to my mother. (I will have my family know that I encouraged my mother to rest and relax while she was at my house, but she is completely out of my control.)
But we will keep you posted as the date get closer. It is a short blog tonight because my pregnant hands are numb leading to great difficulty typing and my pregnant feet need soaking.

Be kind
I made a commitment to myself that I would write my blog at least once a week. I'm a little behind, but my mind is filled with baby stuff and work. And honestly, I feel a little repetitive. But I suppose life is a just a repetitive cycle of events. We make plans, life throws us a curve ball, and we readjust. Over and over. In the meantime we continue to make plans to eat better, exercise more, and get organized. Yet we still crave french fries, there's always an excuse not to go to the gym, and the filing cabinet is still a mess.
So this year, I didn't make my usual list of resolutions. I've just decided to be kinder and let life flow a little. I'm going to be kinder to others, more understanding, and more forgiving of myself. (See what pregnancy does...makes you all self reflective). These ideas were pressed into service this week when I was asked to give a lecture to graduating NP's on how to survive the first year out of school. As I reflected back over the past year and the multiple changes that have occurred the best piece of advice I came up with was to go on vacation. At least a mental vacation from all the demands we place on ourselves as we strive towards our various goals. Be kind to yourself, let the dishes sit in the sink so you can play with your kids, be proud of your accomplishments, and accept the compliments given to you.
So I wrote my presentation with that in mind. I'm not sure if that is what my boss wanted, but that's what I'm going with for my lecture. And I hope everyone is kind to themselves and allows for a little mental vacation this week. Life will repeat itself next week, hopefully with all the good moments from last week. And then we can put them in our blogs to remind ourselves to be kind and savor the good when it comes our way.

What not to do with a pregnant lady
Things not to do with a pregnant lady:
Things such as ride a roller coaster, feed her stinky seafood, or have her climb ten foot ladder. Others things include not moving her to a southern state where football is considered the only viable sport, thus peaking her interest over the years. Furthermore once her knowledge has grown where she can actually watch a game and enjoy it, do not send her Alma Mater to the Sugar Bowl. And then do not have said team play a nail biting game against one of the better teams in the nation. This situation will cause mild contractions and the need to yell at the T.V. followed by banishment to the computer room for the third quarter.
When I was at Utah, we won gymnastics championships. Football championships are way cooler. So we have put away the orange and pulled out the RED. To all the doubters, I believe the record is 13-0. So don't argue with the pregnant lady. Let her just pretend to remember the fight song and yell with joy at the T.V.

New Year primed for New adventures...
Let me just start this blog by wishing everyone a Happy New Year. Since I have terrible to my blog and haven't written lately, I hoping this will start the year off on the right foot. SO, I hope everyone out there had a great holiday and is full of happy thoughts as we head into the new year. And as we head into the future, let's reflect on old adventures and hope for new ones.
Old Adventures: 2008 was a pretty good year. The year includes graduation, new jobs, and minimal tragedies. I'd like to think of it as the Year of Lucky Chances. I say this because most people I know were faced with life changing events and so far everything has gone smoothly. Or it could be the year of busy nights. I say this because most people I know these days are pregnant. I'm not sure what happened this summer, but obviously the weather was just warm enough to have some fun.
New Adventures: 2009-The biggest adventures Skye and I are embarking on is, of course, welcoming little miss Carolina to the world sometime in March. So far that adventure has been a mixed blessing. Where I'm thrilled to be pregnant, the side effects are less then charming. I could handle just about everything except the recycling of food I appear to be so fond of these days. (By the way, Carolina and I did manage to kept down both dumpling soup and Danish sausage over Christmas. This proves she is my child and she can behave when the pressure's on.)
This recycling has interfered with many a projects these days. The nursery is not done and there seems to be a variety of household projects in constant motion around the house. I awoke today with renewed energy and a list of projects only to be taken down over breakfast. So away with the list and back to bed. But at least in bed I can count baby kicks and remember why I volunteered for this in the first place.
So if anyone is looking for a new adventure, head south. The weather is warm, there is no snow, and all the food is fried. There's a messy, but open guest room and I will only make you do one household chore a day. Happy New Year.
